Target Audience:  Any educator or administrator that evaluates, creates, or implements 504 plans in the classroom or school setting.

Section 504 is often misconstrued and misunderstood by many within the educational arena. While some consider Section 504 to be a lighter variant of special education or even a lesser potent statute, the reality of Section 504 is far more significant in its impact to your students. This presentation will provide attendees with a broad overview of Section 504, compare it to special education and other pathways of comprehensive student supports, review 2024 hot topics, and offer stepwise guidance for school-based teams to navigate the complex but critical landscape of Section 504 to ensure non-discriminatory access to your scholars with disabilities. This presentation is targeted towards educational teams, their processes, and teacher responsibilities in ensuring non-discriminatory access to students with disabilities.

Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will identify at least 5 key differences between Section 504 and special education.
2. Participants will operationalize Section 504 language towards substantial limitation within
eligibility for Section 504.
3. Attendees will explore 10 or more relevant areas of Section 504 within 2024, including dyslexia
and seizure care plans.
4. Participants will conceptualize 9 steps to Section 504 from initial referral to reevaluation.
5. Attendees will identify at least 5 salient areas of misunderstanding with Section 504 with concrete
guidance to ensure non-discriminatory access to all students with disabilities.
6. Participants will review key educational team responsibilities in child find, assessment, eligibility,
discipline, and reevaluation.
