The Operating Standards for Identifying and Serving Students Who are Gifted (Ohio Administrative Code 3301-51-15) require educators who are designated providers of gifted education services to receive specialized training in gifted education and ongoing support to meet the academic and affective needs of students who are gifted. General education teachers who are designated service providers and do not otherwise have licensure or endorsement in gifted education must receive professional development in gifted education covering specific competencies from qualifying providers.
ESC Gifted Supervisors are often invited to speak at staff in-service days at elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as at Common PD Day at LCCC. Topics attend to these required Gifted Competencies, and include ODE compliance issues, WEP writing, and providing gifted service to meet the needs of their diverse learners. Teachers are provided with updated resources, strategies, and support in an effort to meet the needs of the gifted population. Online book studies are also available to fulfill the ODE required PD for general education teachers of gifted students.
The ESC Gifted Supervisor have developed a nice variety of opportunities for teachers of the gifted to receive these necessary PD hours. Most opportunities are exclusively offered to District Consortium members; however, there are some that are offered to non-members for a nominal fee. After a teacher meets the total clock-hour requirement, the district determines ongoing hours.
